The prestigious award formerly known as the 'Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker Award' has been renamed as the 'Kansas Master Farm Family Award' to reflect the changing face of farming in Kansas. This change acknowledges the diverse and dynamic nature of modern farm families and their significant contributions to agriculture and community leadership.

The roots of this award can be traced back to 1927 when Arthur Capper, the publisher of Kansas Farmer magazine, established the first class of Kansas Master Farmers. The following year, The Farmers Wife magazine created the Master Farm Homemaker Guild and introduced the Master Farm Homemaker award. These two organizations operated independently until 1940 when they merged under the sponsorship of Arthur Capper, recognizing married couples for their excellence in farming and homemaking.

Recognizing the Changing Face of Farming

The concept of a traditional farm family has expanded over the years, with nontraditional arrangements becoming more common. Today, it is not uncommon to find parents working alongside their sons and daughters as equal partners on the farm. Siblings may form partnerships, and women-led farms have also emerged, challenging the traditional farmer-farm homemaker label. These diverse farm families deserve recognition for their outstanding contributions to agriculture and their local communities.

Kansas embraces and accommodates all types of farm families, recognizing the vital role they play in the state's agricultural economy and their contributions to community vitality. The new name of the award, the Kansas Master Farm Family Award, reflects this inclusivity and ensures that it aligns with the changing landscape of farm families in Kansas.

Honoring the Legacy of Master Farmers and Farm Homemakers

As we look towards the future, it is important to honor the rich legacy of the Master Farmers and Farm Homemakers who paved the way for us. The Kansas Master Farmer Association and Kansas Master Farm Homemaker Guild will continue to exist as separate entities, allowing Master Farm Family honorees to join either organization based on their preference. The shared goals of promoting agriculture and community service remain unchanged.

As the editor of Kansas Farmer, one of my objectives is to delve into the history of this prestigious award and bring forward the stories of past winners. These stories encapsulate the remarkable achievements and contributions made by these farm families, providing valuable lessons for future generations.

Each time I have the privilege of speaking with an honored couple, I am inspired by their dedication to building upon their family's farming legacy while creating opportunities for the next generation. Sons may return with agronomy degrees to manage the crop production on a western Kansas corn farm, while daughters equipped with agribusiness or animal science degrees take charge of livestock enterprises on an eastern Kansas ranch. Nephews may oversee the equipment and technology needs of a multigenerational family farm in south-central Kansas, while single women may utilize innovative farming practices such as goat herding to enhance soil health and market their products directly to consumers.

Celebrating the Diversity and Resilience of Kansas Farm Families

Kansas embraces and accommodates all types of farm families, recognizing the vital role they play in the state's agricultural economy and their contributions to community vitality. The new name of the award, the Kansas Master Farm Family Award, reflects this inclusivity and ensures that it aligns with the changing landscape of farm families in Kansas.

I take great pride in the fact that Kansas is one of the few states with organizations and awards like these, which showcase the exceptional work of our farm families. The stories of past winners capture a wealth of history, and it is my mission to share these stories in a way that educates and inspires future generations.

As we move forward, let us celebrate the diversity and resilience of Kansas farm families. The Kansas Master Farm Family Award will continue to honor their achievements and serve as a testament to their commitment to agriculture and community.
